Hey {inspired} readers!
We are all guilty of stressing over weight loss or looking our best, imagine how much that stress triples for a Bride! Today we are sharing a Q&A interview with Health Specialist and Personal Trainer, Briana Witt.

Briana is a graduate of Mercyhurst College with a BA in Psychology and a BS in Exercise Science. She currently works as a Health Specialist for the Industrial Athlete program at the Boeing Company in Auburn, Washington.

Q: What is a Fad Diet?

A: The National Institutes of Health describe fad diets as severely restricted calorie intake for rapid weight loss. These types of diets do not mean you will keep the weight off. Crash diets require you to eat fewer calories than you need to live. This behavior trains your metabolism to slow down to conserve energy. Once you have completed your crash diet you are left with a body that burns calories much slower than before you started, resulting in weight gain.

A picture we use as our motivation {D & C}

Q: Why do people give into the fad diet gimmick?

A: Eating healthy portions and exercise can help you lose weight. Stay away from Fad Diets.

Two words: Instant Gratification. It’s as simple as that. We are humans that constantly want and need to see results immediately, no matter what the consequences reap. If something is really worth it you should want to work hard for it. Hopefully you are not sitting there thinking, “Yeah, I am so happy my friend, parent, or significant other got me the job I have.”  I hope you are thinking “I worked hard to be where I am today, to have what I do.”  So, why wouldn’t you do the same for your own body?

The companies that advertise their quick weight loss fad diet gimmicks just want your money and do a great job at getting it. Companies also like to use celebrities to market their product. How realistic is that? Celebrities are a limited number of the general population and are not perfect models of how we should look. These companies play on our insecurities and self image to make a buck. Let’s stop their income and start a lifetime of happiness and health the safer way!

Q: What happens once the fad diet is over?

A: Once rapid weight loss occurs and the diet is over, typically people return to their old habits of not eating properly and exercising. The weight that is lost is usually water weight and precious muscle. Weight that is lost is gained back rapidly, usually as fat, because the person did not learn how to eat properly.

Q: How Do I Spot a Fad Diet?

A: While there is no set approach to identifying a fad diet, many have the following characteristics:

  1. Recommendations that promise a quick fix.
  2. Dire warnings of dangers from a single food group, product, or regimen.
  3. Claims that sound too good to be true.
  4. Simplistic conclusions drawn from a complex study.
  5. Recommendations based on a single study or testimonials.
  6. Dramatic statements that are refuted by reputable scientific organizations.
  7. Lists of ‘good’ and ‘bad’ foods.
  8. Recommendations made to help sell a product.
  9. Recommendations based on studies published without review by other researchers.
  10. Recommendations from studies that ignore differences among individuals or groups.
  11. Eliminating 1 or more of the 5 food groups.

Q: So what is the key to losing weight and maintaining weight loss?

A: First and foremost, awareness of caloric intake! I am not saying count every single calorie that you ingest; however, you should be more aware of what you are eating and how much. You can start by keeping a food log. You can find many fitness and diet logs to help you out online.

That brings us to the second key: Portion Control! Portions have increased drastically over the past 40 years.  A study from the American Journal of Public Health states ‘researchers found that cookies are 700% bigger than USDA standards’.

Last but not least, you need to have a regular exercise routine. Everyone has to start somewhere, but to maintain a healthy weight you need a combination of cardiovascular exercise, strength training, and proper nutrition. The American College of Sports Medicine recommends at least 20 minutes of physical activity per day, and working toward 60 minutes per day. There are many great fitness tools and apps available to you on the web for tracking your weight loss and exercise progress. WebMD has a wonderful fitness tracker tool available for the general population. If you are able to, seek the services of a health professional like a Registered Dietician, Health Fitness Specialist (HFS), or Certified Personal Trainer (CPT) to help personally guide you.  They can be a wealth of knowledge! Check out the ACSM’s (American College of Sports Medicine) website for more information regarding exercise for the general population at ACSM.org.

Do you have any other quick tips or advice for our readers?

  • People who eat several small meals a day are able to lose weight and maintain weight better than someone who does not, especially if the snacks are protein packed.  Eating more often keeps your metabolism in high gear. HEALTHY SNACKING IS OKAY!
  • Low fat does not necessarily mean low calorie! Just because it says low fat on the label does not mean it is the best option for you! Be aware of how many calories are in each serving and try not to over indulge because it says low fat! They all add up!
  • People who drink more water burn more calories! When you are dehydrated your metabolism lags! Add a cup of water to each meal you eat to get your daily intake. It will also create a sense of fullness and cause you to eat smaller portions at the meal as well.
  • Slow and steady weight loss (1-2 pounds per week) is the safest way to lose weight and maintain weight loss. Rapid increases and decreases in weight make it harder for your body to stabilize a proper weight for you. One pound equals 3,500 calories! WOAH! To lose one pound per week you need to burn 500 calories more per day than you eat (7days X 500 calories = 3,500 calories or 1 pound lost). The recommended approach for this strategy is to cut 250 calories from your food intake and burn 250 extra calories by working out each day.  Now that doesn’t sound so hard does it?
  • It is not too late to start a diet and exercise program! Starting is always the hardest part, but there are many tools and people to support you through your journey!  Take control of your life and be as healthy as you can be!

Hello & Good Morning to our Lovely Inspired Readers!

Have you ever wondered how Brides get those cute wooden arrows pointing to the ceremony site or fun nick nacks that you can only find from rare garage sales? Well today we are going to share an awesome resource we feel many Brides will find handy. We found it on Ruffled Blog {one of our absolute favorites} under “Recycle Your Wedding”. It’s just like Craigslist, just for your wedding items! You can list items you have for sale, allowing you to give a description of your item(s), terms, ad category, method of payment, etc. Be Green. Share your wedding instead of letting your beautiful stuff sit in boxes in your garage!

If you are a Bride-to-be on the hunt for decor and other great wedding stuff, click browse listings and it will reveal all the items for sale. The items range anywhere from, photo booths to wedding gowns and much more trendy & wanted items used at weddings! Some other great stuff includes Bride & Groom signs, bridal shoes, back drops, suitcases, chandeliers & more!

One other handy tool  is being able to post “Wanted” ads. Say that you cannot find something listed on this link, you can always make a Wanted listing of the item(s) you are looking for. All you need to do is what you would normally do for listing an item for sale, just categorizing it as “wanted”.

{click recycle.your.wedding}{how to list your item for sale or how to create a listing for a wanted item}{what the browsing section looks like for items for sale}

{how to list your item for sale or how to create a listing for a wanted item}{what the browsing section looks like for items for sale}

We hope today’s blog helps Brides who have decor to share and the Brides-to-be who are on the search!

Today on {be inspired} we are featuring a DIY project that is a MUST for your Wedding day, a cake/dessert stand!  Cake stands can become costly, but today we are going to show you how to DIY {do it yourself} and help that budget!
These are not only cost efficient but easy to do! If you are planning on having a dessert table at your wedding get creative, use different colors, textures of paint, shapes, and sizes of flower pots/trays! Think outside of the box, stack multiple stands and connect them on top of each other, making a cupcake or cookie stand! Not only are these cake stands multi-purpose but they are a great way to show off your style too!

Okay the supplies you need can be found at Home Depot, Lowes, or Michaels (can be more pricey here BUT – if you have a smart phone download the Michaels app and get 40% off one item coupons that are scanable right from your phone!)

Here are all of the {ingredients} Flower pot, Flower pot tray, Sand paper, Hot glue, Newspaper, & Spray Paint … Acrylic paint can always be painted on using a brush!Take the Flower Pot and get ready to paint! I thought scuffing it up with sand paper would help it look a little more rustic {optional}

Paint the Flower Pot which ever color you like, we choose {satin}Also paint the Tray, front and back! Some of the price tag didn't peel off but its okay because that is where you attach the flower pot!Place the tray & flower pot upside down, gluing the bottom of the pot, make sure you center it!

We added some pearls to give it some character. Add beads, fabric, or paint the trim to match your style!

TA-DA! Now you have your very own DIY cake stand!

We hope you enjoyed this DIY project and try it for your own wedding or bridal shower!
Hope you have an {inspired} day!

{be inspired} Top 10 Questions to Ask When Interviewing a Vendor

{be inspired} will be posted every Tuesday featuring vendors, trends, and DIY projects! Our goal is to inspire the brides-to-be and friends/family who may know a bride-to-be!

……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

Congrats to the couples that got engaged over the Holidays! We figured since it is the beginning of the year a lot of you are planning on going to Bridal shows and starting the journey of meeting and hiring Vendors!
Having a connection with you vendors is key! Here are 10 questions we think you should ask vendors when meeting with them for a consultation… enjoy!

1. Ask to see a profile of their work.
-Most vendors will bring pictures or video of their work from previous weddings.

2. Ask for a detailed list of what services are included in the package you are paying for.
-Having this list will give you clarity of what you are paying for.

3. Ask for copies of anything you sign and ask the vendor to sign and date it for you too.
-This is always good to have on file and most times, your wedding coordinator may ask to review it for you.

4. How much is required as a deposit and if it is non-refundable.
-This may clear the path for any hidden fees you may not have been aware of.

5. Will you price match if you find a better deal for the same services offered.
-Economically, most vendors will price match for the same service offered and it doesn’t hurt to ask.

6. Will you be bringing additional staff to assist you.
-Most venues give limited time for setup. If your wedding vendor has additional help, it will make their work more efficient.

-This is also important to ask the DJ/Band Photographer, Wedding Coordinator, Videographer because they will be at your reception and served dinner.

7. How long have you been in business? And how many weddings do you book per year?
–  This gives you an idea of their experience and involvement in the industry.

8. Do you book more than one wedding a weekend?
– This is important to some brides and grooms because it reasures them that their vendor will get a good nights rest and will be fresh and focused for your big day.

9. Do you have a payment plan available?
-Many vendors offer payment plans or installments along the course of the time you met them to about the week before you get married.

10. How far in advance do I need to book with you?
-This question is especiallyimportant if you are wanting to interview other wedding vendors of the same service. You will have a better understanding of how quickly they get booked for weddings.

Hope you have an {inspired} day!

Love,
Danielle & Cecily

What is Pinterest?

Pinterest is one of the hottest websites right now! So many people are “pinning”, creating boards, following other fellow “pinners” and looking for the next best thing to pin. Are you thinking “what is the hype all about?!” … we are here to explain this amazing craze!

Whether you are decorating your new home, planning a dream home, planning a wedding, styling a photo shoot, designing your personal style or saving delicious recipes, Pinterest is an online organization tool for whatever you decide to “pin”. You can begin by pinning pictures from a website, re-pin other pictures you find on Pinterest, from friends that you follow, or a picture of your own. Once you “pin” that picture, it is important to credit where you found that inspiration and to make sure you file it under a particular board you have created, such as wedding, home ideas, favorite recipes, etc.
{Think of this as a way of saving documents under a certain folder on your desktop}.

Since most of our readers are Brides, or are affiliated to planning a wedding, we want to point out how Pinterest is a way of helping you visualize and get inspired for your big day!

Inspiration boards are perfect ways for a Bride to sort out the style, color and overall theme of her wedding all on one space. {Inspiration Boards, for those of you that do not know, are boards/posters that you attach pictures of ideas you like for your wedding in a collage format}

For example say you loved this invitation, dress, flowers, and dessert - you would put them all onto your inspiration board like so. Photo credit : http://www.inspiredbythis.com/2010/05/what-inspires-hostess-with-the-mostess/

Inspiration boards create visualization of the big picture – helping you shop for flowers, your dress, bridal party attire, shoes, or putting together the color schemes for centerpieces that will coordinate with the style and look that you are going for.

On Pinterest, you can create an inspiration board for your wedding…and not just one but several inspiration boards! Pinterest is the “green” way to create your inspiration board, no messy clippings from magazines or print outs from the computer, you can go wild and not have to store that huge poster board you created!

Pinterest is also great way to open your eyes and mind to everything beautiful. You will find things and ideas that you have never seen or thought of before!

From Pinterests MISSION:
“Our goal is to connect everyone in the world through the ‘things’ they find interesting. We think that a favorite book, toy, or recipe can reveal a common link between two people. With millions of new pins added every week, Pinterest is connecting people all over the world based on shared tastes and interests.”

So, check out Pinterest for yourself! All you need to do to begin all the fun is {request an invite}, or have a friend who is already “pining” send you one!
We can send you an invite if you email us at weddingsinspiredfromtheheart@yahoo.com .
Pinterest is also available for free in the app store on your iPhone!

Do you use Pinterest already? If so, what do you usually pin or what boards are you currently working on?

Hope you have an {inspired} day!
